| Adalia bipunctata (Linnaeus, 1758) [dbid 605] (3.5-5.2mm) Rounded body with red elytra. Each elytra has a black central spot. Pronotum black with three white central markings and a white blotch on each edge. Head small and black, as are legs and antennae. In Canada, the western variety has a pale pronotum with large black markings forming an 'M' shape and two irregular black bands on each elytron. Occasionally this beetle is almost completely black with two red spots and a large red mark on each shoulder. Widespread throughout Britain particularly in urban and suburban environments, but rare at altitude. Native to Canada. Feeds on aphids and all other coccinellid food sources. Larvae are grey of a slug-like appearance. Large paired black spots to top half of body become rows of four black spots along the rest of the body. Rear half may have a pale orange stripe. |
